7/27/12 HOMER, AK

Yesterday we took a walk along the beach and up on the boardwalk browsing the little shops, then along the Harbor. It’s sunny and around 70 degrees. The sun is warm but the wind picks up mid afternoon and is very chilly coming off the ocean. The last two mornings we’ve been able to drink our coffee outside enjoying the sun before the wind picks up. Today we took a scenic drive up a mountain that overlooks Homer and Cook Inlet, absolutely beautiful views. We ate lunch at a beautiful overlook high up on the mountain. This was a rare day in the last 2 months we’ve been able to take off our jackets. Our intention today was to take a highly recommended hike called “Homestead Trail”. We didn’t get far before the trail was so overgrown with brush it was up to our chins. Not fun hacking through, so we turned back. The best hikes from what I’ve read are in Kachemak State Park. The only problem is it is only accessible by boat or plane. A water taxi is $60 per person round trip. Maybe if we stay long enough we’ll do that. We arranged to have our mail sent here to Homer last Saturday. As of today it has not arrived. We’ll check with the post office again tomorrow. If it comes we’ll head up to the town of Kenai. If not we will move to another park here in Homer for the weekend, or until our mail arrives.

View from high on a hill overlooking Homer and Homer Spit. We are camped at the end of the Spit (the land that stretches out into the bay).
