We arrived at our summer camp host job on April 13th
and started training with one of the hosts that have worked here the last 2
winters. This last week we have worked
by ourselves in both of the kiosk locations here at Emma Wood State Park. There is more to it than you would think and
a lot of paperwork to be completed at the end of each shift. I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of
things. We haven’t done much touring of
the area yet.
Our camp is located on the North edge of Ventura near the
historical part of town. We enjoy riding
our bicycles into town and also the promenade and pier 2 ½ miles away. Since we’ve been here we have gone through
days when we love it here, then days when we’re ready to leave. With all the pros, there are just as many
cons. All the research I did before we came here did not mention the homeless
population. I guess if your homeless
this is an ideal place with good weather most of the time.
We have volunteered to work the Beach Festival this
Saturday. It should be fun, live music,
vendors and who knows what else. We’ll
work 10-1:30 then enjoy the rest of the day at the festival.
In the last month we have had several phone calls and emails
asking if we are available to workcamp. That’s
good to know the jobs are out there. One
is a host job at Cape Blanco Lighthouse for the month of May. That was where I really wanted to work, but
with only 9 lighthouses that use camp host it’s a slim chance of getting
one. Other camp host jobs in Northern
California and some in Oregon.
Kiosk/gatehouse that we work at.
